Paddle NSW 2009 Sprint Series at SIRC (4 regattas)
ICC paddlers raced in the new Paddle NSW Sprint Regatta held at Penrith on Saturday 27th June. It was a huge turnout, especially for our junior members, many who had never raced before!! Fantastic effort for all.
The regatta also served as a National Talent Squad (NTS) selection regatta. Congratulations to Kirsty Higginson and Scott Smith who were selected to the 2009 Canoe Sprint National Talent Squad (NTS) touring team to compete the Junior Olympic Hopefuls Regatta, Prague Czech Republic September 11-13. This was Scott's second year to be selected in NTS. For Kirsty, this was an amazing effort as she only started kayaking last year with Suzi Edwards who set the foundation in her paddling and then recently passed her onto Terry Prosser.
ICC will be hosting Round 2 of this series on Saturday 18th July. Please email Gary David or John Burrows if you can assist on this day. WE NEED AS MANY VOLUNTEERS TO RUN ROUND 2!
Each round will be organised by PaddleNSW and the host club, who will assist with supplying volunteers to run the event. The events are designed to enable all paddlers to experience sprint racing on a world-class course. Though the regatta is primarily for K-boats, if you don’t have one, you can paddle any boat. Finals will be determined by elapsed time from heats, irrespective of boat type. Just have a go, and have some fun! Both 1000m and 500m distances will be raced. Round 1 will be held in conjunction with AC NTS selection trials, and use the finishing tower. Round 1 Registrations on-line for all participants (including AC talent NTS squad triallists) is $25.00. David Smith wins GOLD in K2 1000m at World Cup 3!

Illawarra Canoe Club member David Smith (NSW) and Luke Morrison (SA) have claimed a gold medal in the men's K2 1000m race at the Canoe Sprint World Cup 3 event in Szeged, Hungary.
Smith and Morrison executed the perfect race to reel in the field after the 750 mark and not only claim the gold medal but secure their berth at the World Championships later this year in Canada.
Smith and Morrison completed the course in a time of 3:38.001 to lead home the Hungarian and German crews to claim a famous victory. Fellow Australians Jacob Clear (QLD) and Murray Stewart (NSW) finished in fourth place and can now focus on the 500m races on Sunday.
The pair was ecstatic after the race.
“To win the gold at this World Cup is an amazing feeling,” Smith said. “We have been working really hard for the last few months and to secure our spot in Canada is the perfect way to end the world cup season.”
